Rugbyliiton hallitus on valinnut miesten XV-maajoukkueen päävalmentajaksi walesilaisen Stuart Edwardsin. Nimitys on kaksivuotinen.
Vuodesta 2015 alkaen Walesissa valmentanut Edwards on toiminut maajoukkueen apuvalmentajana vuodesta 2025 vastaten leiritysten toteuttamisesta ja suomalaisen pelitavan kehittämisestä maajoukkuetasolla. Edwards valmistui juuri erinomaisin arvosanoin Walesin yliopistosta (Prifysgol Cymru Y Drindod Dewi Sant) kandidaatiksi rugbyvalmennuksen ja -suorituskyvyn opinto-ohjelmasta. “Olen saanut valmentaa joukkueita ruohonjuuritasolta maajoukkueisiin ja tehdä töitä erinomaisissa valmentajakokoonpanoissa. Muutoskyky, jatkuva oppiminen ja joukkueen oman identiteetin sekä kehityskaaren ymmärtäminen ovat tasosta riippumatta avainasemassa onnistuvan joukkueen luomisessa. Huippu-urheiluvalmennuksen ja taktiikan luomisen lisäksi luottamuksen kulttuurin luominen joukkueen sisälle ja pelaajien keskinäiseen haastamiseen kannustaminen sekä yhteisten tavoitteiden eteen työskentely muodostavat perustuksen, joka johtaa vääjäämättä menestykseen”, Edwards valottaa taustaansa.
Edwards luonnehtii valmennusfilosofiaansa pelaajien täyttä potentiaalia kasvattavaksi. “Uskon parhaan joukkueen rakentuvan yhdistelmälle vastuuta, yhteyttä, selkeyttä ja periksiantamatonta omistautumista kehittymiselle. Suomalaisen rugbyn arvot ja sisu ovat maajoukkueen identiteetin rakennuspalikat, jotka johtavat myös nousuun Rugby Europen Trophy-tasolle”, Edwards linjaa.
Miesten XV-maajoukkue pelaa kaudella 2026-27 euroopan kolmanneksi korkeimmalla sarjatasolla (Conference). Päättyneellä kaudella 2025-26 maajoukkue sijoittui lohkokakkoseksi hävittyään ainoastaan lohkovoittaja Luxemburgille.
Edwards on valinnastaan innostunut: “Uskomattoman ylpeä. Syvä kunnioitukseni pelaajille, toimihenkilöille, vapaaehtoisille ja suomalaiselle rugby-yhteisölle, joka jatkaa pelin suosion kasvattamisen eteen työskentelyä. Tältä pohjalta on hyvä kehittää suomalaisen rugbyn arvojen mukaisesti toimivaa maajoukkuetta.”
Valintaprosessia johtanut Rugbyliiton hallituksen puheenjohtaja Alejandra Vargas kertoo kiinnostuksen olleen laajaa. “Syvää kokemusta ja vahvoja taidonnäytteitä riitti. Loppujen lopuksi vaakakupissa painoivat kuitenkin joukkueen ja suomalaisen rugbykulttuurin tuntemus sekä merkittävä kokemus ja vahvat juuret rugby-yhteisössä. Haluamme nähdä Stuartin vauhdittavan joukkueen uudelle tasolle.”
Puheenjohtaja Vargas toivoo menestystä paikkansa jättävälle päävalmentaja Andrew Barlowlle. “Stuart rakentaa Andyn valamalle perustukselle. Andy käytti rajalliset resurssit joukkueen hyödyksi erinomaisesti. Hän on uskomaton valmentaja ja yhteistyökumppani; joukkue on hänen johdollaan kasvanut ja oppinut paljon viimeisen kahden vuoden aikana. Toivomme Andylle kaikkea hyvää.”

The Board of the Finnish Rugby Federation has appointed Welshman Stuart Edwards to a two-year term as the Head Coach for the Men’s XV National Team.
Edwards has coached rugby in Wales since 2015. Since 2025 he has been responsible for training camps and developing the Finnish way of playing as Assistant Coach of the national team. Edwards has recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) Rugby Coaching and Performance, First-Class Honours, from Wales University.
“I have been fortunate to coach and learn across a wide range of environments, from grassroots and community rugby through to academy, university, performance, and international rugby. Each experience has reinforced my belief that sustainable success is built on strong relationships, clear communication, and creating an environment where people can be their best.
I draw heavily on the lessons learned from working with players at all stages of their development and from collaborating with outstanding coaches and performance staff throughout my career. These experiences have taught me the importance of adaptability, continuous learning, and understanding that every team has its own identity and journey.
My background has also taught me that high performance is not just about tactics and physical preparation. It is about creating a culture where players trust one another, challenge one another, and are willing to sacrifice for a shared goal. When those foundations are in place, performance naturally follows.”, Edwards summarises his progression to the Head Coach position.
Edwards describes his coaching philosophy as player development -centred: “My philosophy is centred on creating an environment where players can thrive, challenge themselves, and maximise their potential. I believe the best teams are built through a combination of accountability, connection, clarity, and a relentless commitment to improvement.
As a coach, I want training to be purposeful and demanding, but also enjoyable. Every session should have a clear objective, challenge players to grow, and reinforce the standards and behaviours we expect as a team. I believe players perform at their best when they understand the purpose behind what they are doing and feel empowered to take ownership of their development.
As Head Coach of Finland, I want to build a team identity that reflects the values of Finnish rugby and the concept of Sisu, the courage, resilience, determination, and strength of character to keep moving forward regardless of the challenge. I want our players to be physically prepared, tactically intelligent, mentally resilient, and deeply connected to each other and the jersey they represent.”
The Men’s XV National Team plays on the third highest level (Conference) of Rugby Europe competitions in the upcoming season 2026-27. In the recently ended 2025-26 campaign the team finished second in the pool stage losing only to pool-winner Luxembourg.
Edwards is elated about the appointment. “I am honoured and incredibly proud to be appointed Head Coach. Having been part of the national team environment, I have developed a deep appreciation for the players, staff, volunteers and wider rugby community who continue to contribute so much to the growth of the game in Finland.
I would like to thank the Finnish Rugby Federation for the trust they have placed in me. I am excited to build upon the foundations already established and work alongside the players, coaches and support staff as we continue to develop a programme that reflects the values of Finnish Rugby.

The selection process was headed by the Finnish Rugby Federation Chair Alejandra Vargas. “The panel had a highly skilled, experienced, and competitive pool of candidates for this role, making it an incredibly difficult decision. However, Stuart’s familiarity with our current coaching staff, the team and our culture, combined with his vast experience and deep roots in the rugby community ultimately tipped the scales in his favor. We are eager to see him guide and lead the team to new heights.”, says Vargas.
Chair Vargas lauds the previous Head Coach Andrew Barlow who is stepping down after filling the position since late 2024: “As Stuart takes the reins, he will build upon the fantastic foundation laid by our outgoing head coach, Andy Barlow, who maximized the resources at hand to achieve great things. Andy has been an amazing coach and partner in the rugby scene, and our team has grown and gained immense knowledge under his leadership over the last two years. We wish Andy the very best.”
