Finnish women’s 7’s team plays this weekend (16.7-17.7) among the other top 11 European countries in Bucharest, Romania at the European Championship. The Finnish team has fought its way into Europe’s leading rugby 7’s countries and next weekend’s tournament is a showcase for the young Finnish team.
Last weekend, the team was at a final training camp at Kuhmoinen. According to Head Coach Lauri Ylönen, all the planned trainings were completed with great enthusiasm, and team motivation and team spirit is high. Captain Minna Raatikka cannot wait to get to the pitch. According to Raatikka, the team’s goal is to develop and learn during the tournament, enjoy the game on the international fields and achieve a solid position among the Top 10.
Finland will play in pool B with the Netherlands, France, Russia, Portugal and Moldova, whereas Spain, Italy, England, Germany, Sweden and Romania will play in pool A. Both pools include experienced rugby countries such as France, Spain and England, but also still evolving teams, and the Finnish women are certainly going to challenge these developing teams. Last year, the championship was won by Spain. Finland’s match schedule is as follows:
Rugby 7’s is a newer and faster form of rugby. There are seven players per team on the pitch. The game is well suited to sporty Finnish women. 7’s rugby will be also played in the Olympic Game 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.
