Vantaa 7’s – First leg of Women’s 7s Championship

The first leg of the women’s 7’s championship in 2015 was played in Myyrmäkihalli,

Vantaa on Jan 6, organised by Vantaan Salamapallo rugbyklubi. Six teams from five

clubs participated: Helsinki, Tampere, Vaasa, VASP, Warriors Black and Warriors

Gold. Jyväskylä, Pori and Turku were also represented as Vaasa and VASP were

fielding some of their players. A lot of new players from many clubs were seen on the

sidelines and some already made their debut on the pitch, so we are expecting to

see many new faces playing in the coming events. There were also three U18

players participating, two of whom played their first official rugby games. We are

hoping that we’ll see even more juniors on the pitch in the future.

The competition on the field was intense and the standard of play seemed to have

improved from previous years. Women’s 7s NT coach Lauri Ylönen commented that

there were many new faces taking a lot of responsibility and that these were the

toughest women’s sevens games played so far in Finland. In particular, VASP and

Warriors had two close-run games first in Pool A and again in cup final, as did

Helsinki and Tampere in pool B and plate final. In the end, Warriors Black won the

Cup final against hosts VASP, and Helsinki took the plate over Tampere. All in all, it

looks as though we will see a heated competition for the championship this year.
